Effectiveness of Leininger's Transcultural Counseling Model on Exclusive Breastfeeding

Abstract


Objective: to analyze the effectiveness of the transcultural Leininger-based GATHER counseling model for exclusive breastfeeding.
Methodology: The design of this study is a cross-sectional comparative study with the post-test only control group design approach. Data were collected using questionnaires and observations of 76 breastfeeding mothers in Jember Regency. The samples were 38 people as a control group and 38 people as a treatment group in the form of counseling with the Leininger Transcultural-based GATHER Model at TM 3 of her pregnancy. The sampling technique is purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using the Mann Whitney test.
The results of the study showed that a small proportion (21.6%) of post partum mothers who were not given GETHER counseling based on Transcultural Leininger gave exclusive breastfeeding, meanwhile most mothers who were given counseling (81.1%) gave exclusive breastfeeding. Mann Whitney test results obtained p value <0.05, meaning that the hypothesis is accepted so that it can be said that exclusive breastfeeding for mothers who are given counseling is higher than those who are not given GATHER based on Transcultural Leininger is effective in increasing milk production. Conclusion: Leininger’s Transcultural-based GATHER counseling model is effective in increasing exclusive breastfeeding, the Transcultural-based GATHER counseling model facilitates understanding and management of the factors that cause problems, breastfeeding.
